Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

August 2, 2016

Hope Jahren is a brilliant storyteller. She’ also a scientist who grew up in her father’s laboratory. In essence, her father taught her 42 consecutive years worth of introductory physics and earth science in that lab, nestled within a community college deep in rural Minnesota. Her father loved that lab, and so did she. While her childhood is captured in astonishing, vivid detail--one of the best writers I’ve encountered in a long time--it is her journey to become a female scientist, her love for … [Read more...] about Lab Girl

Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf

July 31, 2016

Our Souls at Night beautifully and movingly explores our human need for connection.  This novel is a gem whose simplicity belies the deepness of the story. Set in the small town of Holt, CO, Addie Moore is a widow in the “twilight” of her life who longs to connect with another human being in the most basic yet profound way. She invites her widower neighbor, Louis, to come sleep with her at night, merely as a companion, a comfort against the loneliness of nighttime: I want to suggest something … [Read more...] about Our Souls at Night

The Rainbow Comes and Goes by Anderson Cooper and Gloria Vanderbilt

July 31, 2016

Growing up, Anderson Cooper really didn’t know much about his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and, oh boy, does she have a lot to tell. Wow, such an amazing life she led.  At the age of 91, Gloria begins a year-long, back-and-forth conversation via email with her son, Anderson Cooper, a conversation unlike any they’ve had before. We find out so much about both of them and, in turn, ourselves. Gloria candidly describes her fascinating, yet difficult, life. Although born with a silver spoon in her … [Read more...] about The Rainbow Comes and Goes

Larose by Louise Erdrich

July 29, 2016

Come gather around the campfire. I want to tell you the story of two families, a tragedy, friendship, and redemption. "Where the reservation boundary invisibly bisected a stand of deep brush, Landreaux waited. He had kept track of the buck all summer, waiting to take it, fat, until just after the corn was harvested. Landreaux had a perfect shot. He took it with fluid confidence. When the buck popped away he realized he’d hit something else. Only when he walked forth to investigate and looked … [Read more...] about Larose
